How spiritual care compares to therapy and coaching
Spiritual care, therapy, or coaching: which one do you need?
When grief, serious illness, or a life transition leaves you searching, it is hard to know where to turn. This page explains how spiritual direction, therapy, life coaching, and hospice chaplaincy differ - and when Aurelia Grove is the right fit.
Quick answer
Choose therapy when you need help managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns.
Choose coaching when you want structured support to reach a specific goal.
Choose spiritual care when you are asking deeper questions: Why is this happening? What does it mean? How do I find peace?
| Path | Primary Focus | Best For | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Therapy | Mental health, emotional healing, symptom relief | Processing trauma, depression, anxiety, complicated grief | Clinicians not trained in support with existential questions and spiritual distress |
| Life Coaching | Goal setting, accountability, future planning | Career changes, habits, productivity, life transitions | Not designed for grief, loss, or meaning-making |
| Spiritual Teaching | Sharing teachings and practices from a specific spiritual tradition | People seeking spiritual guidance or learning in a specific religious/spiritual lineage | Often involves power dynamics that can be limiting during periods of significant loss. Not a substitute for clinical mental health care. |
| Hospice Chaplaincy | Spiritual care at end of life | Individuals and families in the final months of life | Limited to the hospice window; often ends after death |
| Death Doulas | Support with tangible needs around end of life | Individuals and families seeking support navigating the final moments before death and immediately following death | Training varies significantly and no larger body provides oversight. If mistakes are made at end of life, you don't get those moments back. |
| Aurelia Grove | Spiritual care at any life transition, grief and ritual support for the thresholds of life | People seeking meaning before, during, and after loss. People seeking memorial services and death care. | Not a substitute for clinical mental health care or hospice |
There are many powerful healing and support modalities. This chart helps to compare the different kinds of care available, their focus, their limitations and when they are most supportive
What is clinical spiritual care?
Spiritual Care is a companioning relationship. You meet with a clinicaly trained listner - in this case, a board-certified chaplain and ordained Interfaith minister - to explore the spiritual dimensions of your life. There is no agenda except what you bring: fear, gratitude, doubt, legacy, hope, the ache of missing someone or something that should have been. It’s all welcome here.
Spiritual Care is not about being given answers. It is about being heard, deeply, in the question and embodying a space where your answers can emerge in the time they need.
Can I do spiritual care and therapy together?
Yes. Many people do. Therapy tends to the mind and emotions. Spiritual care tends to the soul. They are not competitors. If you are working with a therapist, spiritual care can be a powerful complement.
Is spiritual care religious?
Not necessarily. At Aurelia Grove, spiritual care is inclusive of what your soul brings. You may come from a faith tradition, no tradition, or simply a longing for meaning This work meets you where you are.
